Syrah/Shiraz: The "King" of Australia

Although Syrah/Shiraz vines originated in France, it soon became the King of Australia. France
is where Syrah first hit its peak as a top-quality winemaking grape. Wines like Hermitage and
Chateauneuf-du-Pape use the rich, tannic blackness of the Syrah grape to give them their
delicious mouth-filling flavor. However, the French aren't the only ones making great wine from
the Syrah. Australia relies on it as the workhorse grape for its red wines. Syrahs are wines of
length, intense color, rich fruit flavors and a velvety tannic texture. Syrah delivers hints of
blackberry, plum, prune, black cherry as well as earthy, peppery-spicy, mineral, smoky and
even "meaty" overtones. This wine can be very tasty as a pure varietal and a great resource for
blending. Working with Syrah keeps wine-loving amateurs in step with the industry and adds
pleasure to the home menu. Syrah's big, peppery- spicy quality demands robust, flavorful
foods. Grilled meat and game are a match, and the Rhône blends pair with spicy dishes and
barbecue.
Sangiovese: The "Queen" of Italy

Many Italian winemakers consider Sangiovese the Queen of red wine grapes. Sangiovese is the
most widely planted grape in Italy. Sangiovese produce varied levels of color, flavor and tannins.
Cherry, berry, and spice are the benchmark aroma and flavor characteristics of the medium- to
full-bodied wines made from this grape. The moderate- to firm tannins, crisp acidity and complex
fruit, make wines made with this grape easy to match with many cheeses, fruits, game, meats,
and grilled vegetables. While it's origins are Italian, today the Sangiovese vines can be found in
vineyards around the world.
